What to Do When Other Peoples Energy Affects You

I've recently been asked to write about the impact of other peoples energy on you. I love the topic and think it’s very important to talk about this. If you're an empath and this happens to you it’s important to know how to deal with it so it doesn’t over rule your life, especially if you're working on manifestation and self improvement. This can hold people back ten fold!


Here is some information & tips on energy cleansing.


I am an empath and this means that I can be:

  • Highly sensitive and emotional.

  • Very responsive to emotional experiences and other people’s energy / emotions

  • I can pick up on physical sensations and experience feelings that don’t belong to me.

Although there are a few negatives, the positives outweigh these. We have intuitive sharpness, we are very creative, we have keen senses — in which we can pick up on things before they happen — and we are great listeners and healers!


It can be exhausting (and very common) for an empath to suffer from fatigue and anxiety from carrying other people’s emotions. People naturally open up to you and then you find yourself listening & trying to help people solve their problems. This is a very big factor of my job and I love it!


However... It can be quite relentless on your energy so it’s important that we clear our head and reset regularly to prevent being overwhelmed or too emotional and tired to deal with life rationally.


Ok, so back to the science behind picking up on other people’s energy...

  • Overactive mirror neurons: These are brain cells that are proven to have a link to human compassion. Brain scans have shown that when we watch someone experiencing an emotion, these neurons activate in areas of the brain that correspond to the observed emotion. Empaths may have more than average mirror neurons.

  • Emotions are contagious. Positive emotion, negative emotion and behaviour are proven to be very contagious, even amongst non-empathetic personalities.

  • Electromagnetism (sorry for the big word): This simply means electric currents/fields/energy. Our hearts and brains generate their own electromagnetic fields and it’s possible that empaths have a heightened sensitivity to the fields of others' hearts and brains in their surroundings.

This shows a lot of physical activity going on — and proves why it can be very tiring! So, what can we do to clear our energy and protect ourselves from this overruling our lives?





Here is a list of things I recommend. Not only are these very effective for me, but you will find many forums and discussions online agreeing that energy cleansing rituals and journaling really works. You don’t have to do all of them — just pick what you're most comfortable with and see how you benefit from each one.

  • Practice mindfulness and guided meditations. A meditation to cleanse and unblock your chakras works very well. If you are unsure how to do this or would like more information on mindfulness and meditation practice, my book Beyond the Mind goes into detail on how to do these.

  • Epsom salts. I use Epsom salts in my bath. You can also use them in the shower mixed with your shower gel.

  • Tidy and burn sage. Sage is used to cleanse stagnant energy from any space. It helps with chakra balance and letting go of emotional trauma. It’s also very relaxing! It’s important to declutter and try to stay tidy — clutter can hold stagnant energy and be harder to cleanse.

  • Cutting cords. Think of the person that had a connection or relationship with you and visualise the cord between you both being cut. Past relationships or negative relationship energy can still be present even after they are over — you need to cut the cords!

  • Take a break from technology. Go for a walk without your phone or pick up the book that's been sitting on your shelf for months!

  • Crystals. I love my crystals! I wear them, keep them in my bag and have them all over the house! Crystals are a great way to protect yourself from energy — you can use sage to cleanse and recharge them as well. My favourite crystals for energy protection and cleansing are black tourmaline — I like to keep a bit in the living room where other people are likely to be - and a piece in my bag). You can also get this crystal in jewellery. I also like citrine — it attracts abundance and is great for manifesting alongside cleansing and clearing energy. I have this everywhere even in my jewellery! Don't forget though that it’s important to regularly clean your crystals.

  • Journaling. Journaling is very important and it can be very effective. It gives you the chance to express your own opinions, emotions and creativity, without having the burden of expressing them to anyone else!


There are many other ways of energy healing but these are ones that I've practiced myself and are my faves. If you search online, there are many other ways to do this — daily rituals, crystals and healing practices such as Reiki have proven effective for other people. However, it is your journey so find out what works for you and stick to it!
